Inspired by his great-uncle Bob Kehoe, Joe Widmeier became involved in the flooring business at the young age of 10. As he grew up, he assisted his father, Tim, who worked at Turnquist Carpets in Dubuque, installing floors. Joe’s two uncles were already involved in the business and Joe’s brother became involved as well. What began as a family passion continued through the years, and Joe decided to open his own shop in 2005. Joe founded Widmeier Flooring and enlisted many other family members to join him in business. Currently, his youngest son, daughter, and grandmother serve as store/shop helpers; Joe himself and his father Tim work in sales; his son Cody, brother Nick, cousin Paul, and brother in-law Bob work as installers. The business is unique because it truly is a family affair.
Tim Widmeier describes the business as “a real specialty shop”. Widmeier Flooring is strictly a flooring business that offers various types of flooring for area residents and businesses. Widmeier not only sells hardwood, tile, stone, carpet, laminate, sheet vinyl, and luxury vinyl plank but also installs and services all floors. In addition, it is an authorized Mohawk Color Center. As one of the Mohawk providers in the Dubuque area, they have access to a wide variety of top Mohawk products, many of which are considered “green” products.
Considering it’s a relatively young business, Widmeier Flooring has a new 10,500-square-foot store they finished in August 2010. Owner Joe Widmeier not only believes in keeping his business in the family but hopes to bring customers into the family as well. “My personal philosophy with our customers is to build friendships, not just make acquaintances,” he said.
